Heal & Go₂ Medical

For healthcare professionals

Refer a patient

Heal & Go₂ will accept referrals from GPs, consultants, allied health professionals and other healthcare and performance partners for assessment for hyperbaric oxygen therapy once our first hospital-based Centre of Excellence opens. A referral is a request for assessment, not a commitment to treat: every referral will be reviewed individually by the Medical Director against the recognised indications, the UK guidance position and the patient's standard care. Treatment, where appropriate, will be delivered in a hospital-based Centre of Excellence and is not NHS funded.

Referral criteria

  • The condition is one of the recognised indications for hyperbaric oxygen therapy. The list, with the UK guidance position on each, is on our clinical indications page.
  • Standard care for the condition is in place and has been given time to work. Hyperbaric oxygen is only ever considered alongside it, never instead of it.
  • The referring clinician, or the team already treating the patient, remains responsible for the patient's ongoing care and is willing to hear from us. We will always want to speak to the treating team, and if we treat a patient we write to them.
  • The patient is able to attend a hospital-based Centre of Excellence for a course of daily sessions.
  • The patient has been told that the treatment is not NHS funded and that assessment may conclude it is not appropriate.

A referral is most useful when it includes:

  • The diagnosis and the underlying cause, where known
  • What has already been tried, and for how long
  • Current treatment, including medicines
  • Relevant results, including imaging and microbiology where these exist
  • Anything that bears on safety, including recent surgery, lung or ear problems, seizures, chemotherapy and pregnancy

Screening against contraindications is done by us, against the Medical Director's list on our safety page. You do not need to screen before referring, but it helps to tell us anything on that list that applies.

Contraindications and screening

Screening is against the Medical Director's contraindication list on our safety page, which supersedes manufacturer and society lists. It is not restated here.

How to refer

Referrals are not open yet. They will open when our first hospital-based Centre of Excellence opens, and this section will then set out how to refer. Until then, register your interest through the enquiry form on this site, choosing Healthcare Professional, and we will tell you when referrals open.

Once referrals open, each one will follow the pathway on our treatment page:

  • Clinical review. The Medical Director will review the referral within our clinical governance framework, considering the diagnosis, the underlying cause, what has already been tried, the current evidence and safety. Where needed we will contact you or the treating team before deciding.
  • A straight answer. If hyperbaric oxygen is not appropriate we will say so, and why. If it may have a role, we will discuss the evidence, the limitations and the risks with the patient before anything is agreed.
  • A written treatment plan. Number and frequency of sessions, treatment pressure and duration, and how the course fits with the care already in place.
  • Hospital-based treatment. Sessions will take place in a hospital-based Centre of Excellence with trained operators and clinical oversight.
  • Communication throughout. Progress will be monitored during the course and we will keep the referring clinician informed.
  • Review and next steps. At the end of the course we will review progress with the patient, and we will write to the referring clinician with the outcome and any recommendations.

Governance

Every clinical page on this site is approved by the Medical Director before publication, and the approval is shown on the page. Our clinical governance framework, including how to raise a concern, is set out on the clinical governance page.
