Recovery is where athletic progress actually happens, and it is also where time pressure bites hardest. A soft-tissue injury that keeps a professional out for six weeks has real costs, and even for amateur athletes, a stalled recovery is frustrating and demotivating.
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy has moved from hospital medicine into performance environments because injured tissue has a specific problem HBOT is designed to address: it is short of oxygen. Honesty matters here. Sports recovery is one of the newer applications of HBOT, and the evidence base is still developing. Other claims you may see online run well ahead of the science.
Our position: HBOT is a recovery support tool with a plausible mechanism and promising early evidence, best used within a structured, clinically overseen programme. It is not a shortcut, and anyone selling it as one should be treated with caution.
Professional and elite athletes across football, rugby, combat sports and endurance events do use HBOT as part of recovery and conditioning programmes. That reflects genuine interest inside performance environments, but professional adoption is not a substitute for evidence, which is why we recommend it only where it makes sense for the individual.
Where HBOT fits in a recovery programme
HBOT works best as one component in a properly structured plan, not a replacement for rehabilitation. In practice that means:
- Diagnosis first. The injury needs to be properly assessed before any oxygen therapy is considered.
- Alongside rehab, not instead of it. Physiotherapy, progressive loading and strength work remain the foundation of recovery.
- A defined block of sessions. Protocols typically involve a concentrated series of sessions over one to several weeks, agreed at assessment and adjusted as recovery progresses.
- Communication with your existing team. Where you have a physio, club medic or consultant, we work with them.

Is it safe for athletes?
HBOT has a well-established safety profile when delivered with proper screening and clinical oversight. Athletes go through the same suitability assessment as any patient, covering medical history, current condition and any contraindications such as certain lung or ear conditions. How soon after an injury can HBOT start?
That depends on the injury and is decided at clinical assessment. Some protocols use HBOT early in the recovery window once the injury has been properly diagnosed, while others introduce it later alongside rehabilitation. The right timing is agreed with the clinical team and, where relevant, your physio or club medical staff.
Do professional athletes use HBOT?
Yes. HBOT is used by professional and elite athletes across a range of sports as part of injury recovery and conditioning programmes. Professional use does not replace evidence, but it reflects growing interest in oxygen therapy within performance environments.
Will HBOT improve my performance?
HBOT is not a performance enhancer in the way training, nutrition and sleep are. Its role is in supporting recovery and tissue repair. Any benefit to performance comes indirectly, from recovering well and returning to training sooner, not from the oxygen itself making you faster or stronger.
